Overview

Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is among the biggest and most successful modern universities, with its high ranking attracting a well-qualified student population. It works hard to remain accessible, however, and was the first university to sign the Social Mobility Pledge, established in 2018 by the former education secretary, Justine Greening, to promote equality of opportunity. No university has recruited more students than NTU over the past five years, each year welcoming more than 10,000 new undergraduates. Ethnic minority students make up around one third of the cohort, with black students, for whom NTU runs a Black Leadership Programme, the largest minority grouping. A campus investment programme worth £250m over the next five years will add new learning facilities and make further strides in increasing the institution's sustainability. There are several Nottingham campuses - City campus is home to six academic schools and the new Nottingham School of Art and Design; Clifton campus houses engineering, healthcare and sport students; Confetti Nottingham is home to more than 2,000 creative technologies students; and the outlying Brackenhurst campus is a 500-acre countryside site for animal, rural and environmental sciences and home to NTU's veterinary nursing centre. There are further sites in London and Mansfield.

Paying the bills

More than one in three NTU students benefited from nearly £11m of financial support in 2022-23. The university has increased its pot of hardship support to £1.5m in response to the cost-of-living crisis but distributes most money to students through the NTU bursary. This is worth £750 per year of study and is paid to all students from homes where income is no more than £27,500 - a threshold a little higher than at some other universities. Students who qualify for the NTU bursary will also be entitled to the new annual NTU Opportunity bursary of £165 to support them with the costs of engaging in extracurricular activities. Care leavers and estranged students qualify for annual bursaries of £1,000. Music scholarships offer vocal or instrumental tuition, and sports scholarships provide gym and sports club membership, physiotherapy and advice on sports nutrition and lifestyle. Most student accommodation is provided in collaboration with the private operator UPP. The cheapest rooms are reserved for mature students (aged 21 or over when they begin their courses) and cost £4,398 for a 44-week tenancy. Available more generally, UPP self-catered undergraduate rooms begin at £5,975 for a 44-week let in The Maltings and Meridian Court.

What's new?

A five-year investment plan will see NTU spend more than £250m on new learning facilities across its various campuses. Taking centre stage is the new Design and Digital Arts building on City campus. The new building will be a hub for collaboration with industry and transform digital arts education on campus. Its state-of-the-art facilities will better prepare students for professional, technical and commercial careers in the cultural and creative industries, with students of graphic design, illustration, motion graphics, UX design, filmmaking, television production, 다파벳가입 animation, games design and visual effects among those to benefit most. Separately, the Confetti creative industries institute, which has been part of NTU in Nottingham since 2015, has expanded to a new campus in Whitechapel, east London, providing an additional specialist centre for digital arts, production and performance. Work began over the summer on the Clifton campus to create modern teaching and research labs and new social study spaces for sport science students, an area where NTU plans to grow student numbers. Four new sport degrees, all with foundation years, begin this month in sport and exercise science, and sport science combined with management, coaching or health and nutrition.

Admissions, teaching and student support

Around one quarter of admissions in September 2023 gained a place at NTU with a contextual offer, typically pitched at one A-level grade (or equivalent) below the standard offer. Offers are triggered by information contained within Ucas forms, living in a postcode with low rates of progression to higher education or meeting other multiple equality measurements. NTU works hard to ensure students admitted under widening participation initiatives go on to achieve well at university. Its NTU Student Dashboard provides a range of analytics to allow support staff and tutors to monitor engagement with studies and intervene early when there is a risk of students dropping out. All students have a personal tutor and there is a comprehensive safety net covering mental health and wellbeing. This includes wellbeing and mental health advisers, student support advisers in each academic school, the provision of between four and six counselling sessions, and peer assistance provided through mental health, disability and financial support champions. The university runs Look After Your Mates workshops throughout the year to encourage self-care and awareness among students of the warning signs of distress to look out for. NTU is among a minority of universities to provide consent training - via a Consent Is Everything interactive workshop delivered to more than 6,000 students - as part of the curriculum. hqdefault.jpg
